30th March 2019 Hiking - Walking: Hollesley Common Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: Sunny, warm and still:). Max Speed: Distance Covered: Saturday 30th March – walk ***** Hollesley Common - Sunny, warm and still:). What a top night in the van at Bawdsey Quay waking to a beautiful still, sunny morning with just a hint of hazy mist. Lovely relaxing breakfast before heading off in search of a venue to walk on the way home? At Alderton we turned right for Hollesley ending at Upper common carpark turning in past a couple of cars already parked. I even reversed into the wire fence parking! It was then I noticed a photographer with his huge Canon lens out the window focused on a puddle. We were just about to have a walk across the wood and heath when the really friendly photographer called us over and said he had been there for several hours and that three crossbills were in the tree above the car waiting to come down for a drink. I moved the van across the carpark for a better view and we waited for the birds to come down to wash and drink. The van is a great place to act as a bird hide and we soon had a Chiff Chaff splashing about. It was a bit quiet on the bird front so Mag and I decided to go for a walk through the beautiful pine forest, spotting a couple of squirrels, a long-tailed tit, and a couple of buzzards. I said I bet that the photographer sitting patiently in his car was local bird snipper John Richards who takes the most amazing pics. We saw mountain bikers, dog walkers, horse riders and bird watchers enjoying the continuing fantastic weather:) The pine trees smelt lovely, the broom was in bloom a stunning bright yellow. We passed the spot we saw crossbills a few years back before returning to the van, a quick 3-mile stroll. We will come back with the bikes again later in the year! While Mag made a roll, I continued watching the bird watering hole and had some nice chat with the photographer who told us what was about by the bird call:) After quick visits from a yellow hammer and chaffinches we were treated to Mr and Mrs Crossbill one green, one orange coming down for a drink, just amazing. In the end it was a good day for birds, we even saw a tree creeper briefly. Then several cars came in the carpark so it was time to call it a day. I said goodbye to the other birdwatcher who we had discovered was John and who is now my friend on Facebook so I can enjoy his pictures regularly:) A top couple of days enjoying the best Suffolk has to offer and fingers crossed I get my 12th windsurfing session of the year tomorrow!
